The Cloisters 75th Anniversary

The New York Cloisters Museum & Gardens will be celebrating their 75th anniversary on June 1, 2013.  The event program includes scheduled seminars throughout the day on topics such as:

• Medieval Fruits You Can Grow Today
• The Medieval Kitchen Garden
• Espaliers: Trees For Ornament And Fruit

Members of the horticultural staff will also be available throughout the day to answer questions and discuss aspects of gardening at The Cloisters. Reservations are not necessary, and all events are included with museum admission.

Washington DC Cherry Blossoms 2012

Wondering when the Cherry Blossoms along Washington DC’s Tidal Basin will bloom?  Well, it can be anywhere from mid-March to mid-April depending on what kind of winter we’ve had.  So, it’s hard to pin down to an exact date until about 10 days before they actually bloom.  According to National Park Service chief horticulturist Robert DeFeo, the “peak” bloom period for 2012 will probably be March 24 – 28.   That means that buds could start opening as early as March 20th and last for about 14 days.

The National Park Service monitors the stages of bud development to try and give a more accurate bloom date the closer we get to the actual “pop”.  So, check out the Bloom Watch page on the festival’s website for the latest information.

This year Washington DC will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Cherry Blossom Festival.  It’s a five week event from March 20 – April 27, 2012.   See their website for details and a full schedule.

Scotts Miracle-Gro Offers Garden Grants

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company has launched a program called GRO1000 which awards each community recipient $1500 to create gardens and green spaces in their local area. The company’s goal is to plant 1,000 gardens and green spaces across the U.S., Canada and Europe by 2018.

Communities interested in pursuing “2011 GRO1000” grassroots grants can apply online by March 31, 2011 at http://thescottsmiraclegrocompany.com/GRO1000 . Projects should include the involvement of neighborhood residents and foster a sense of community spirit.

Art Exhibit at the BayShore-Brightwaters Library

If you’re going to be in Suffolk County New York this September, stop in at the BayShore-Brightwaters Public Library to view the work of fine artist Schery Markee Sullivan.  The exhibit will include the “Mother and Child”, “Downtown”, “Floral” and “Abstract” groups and will be on display for the entire month of September.  Contact the library for directions and library hours.
